Thirty-six children who might not otherwise have had presents under the tree at Christmas got into the holiday spirit Saturday alongside Greenfield police officers, staff and their spouses.

The annual Cops 4 Kids event provides children from underprivileged families with a free McDonald’s breakfast, followed by a shopping spree at Wal-Mart.

Each participant is allotted $300 to spend, $200 of which must be spent on clothing.

Each year, the children, who ride with officers in their squad cars, are delighted to arrive in a parade of flashing lights and blaring sirens.

The number of children invited to participate varies each year and is dependent entirely upon donations. Cops 4 Kids donations are accepted year-round and may be mailed to the department, 116 S. State St. in Greenfield.
