Mac would have been proud.

Dozens of local tennis enthusiasts converged on the Greenfield-Central High School tennis courts last weekend to revive a former summer tradition.

For several years, the Greenfield Parks and Recreation Department hosted a tennis tournament that drew adult and youth players to Riley Park. One of the biggest Hancock County tennis supporters was Ellsworth “Mac” McCleerey, owner of McCleerey Sporting Goods in Greenfield up until his death in June, 2011.

When organizers, in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department, decided to put together another tournament — the former event was halted at least 10 years ago, officials said — they renamed the tourney in honor of McCleerey. With that, the 2013 Mac McCleerey Classic Tennis Tournament was created.

“We felt like it was a really great weekend for tennis,” said Ann Vail, one of the tourney organizers. “People had a lot of fun, and that was our goal. I’d like to think Mac would have been very pleased.”
