We have to make these cuts: The Wilkinson Post Office changed its hours on March 11, much to the dismay of some residents. The counter window now closes at noon through the week. It used to stay open until 4:30 p.m. (Jim Mayfield / Daily Reporter)

WILKINSON — From the outside, nothing about the small, white scallop-shingled Wilkinson Post Office looks different, and everything remains the same inside as well, unless you’re there after noon.

Then, as Cheryl Middendorf, agent for Wilkinson Insurance Agency, puts it, “it’s a pain in the caboose.”

Effective March 11, the post office changed the time it rolls down the shutters on its retail window during the week. It used to be open until 4:30 p.m. It now closes at noon.

Saturdays, the counter is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and though the lobby remains open until 4:30 p.m. to check any of the 216 bronze-faced post-office boxes, some folks in town say the new schedule will take some getting used to.
