GREENFIELD — When it comes to finishing high school, Kara Childers has had a lot working against her.

The 18-year-old senior’s brother and sister were both high school dropouts, as was her mother. Her father hasn’t been in the picture since she was 8, and the family has struggled financially for as long as she can remember.

On paper, Childers knows she doesn’t look like a likely candidate for graduation, let alone college.

But Saturday, she’ll walk across the Greenfield-Central stage with the rest of her classmates, and the diploma she receives will read “academic honors.” In the fall, she’ll start classes at the University of Evansville, where she plans to study history.
