CAMBRIDGE CITY — Taylor Mercer, the most successful pitcher in the history of Eastern Hancock softball, left her heart out on the field Thursday night. It just wasn’t enough to bring the Royals a sectional championship, as EH fell agonizingly short for the second-straight year.
Brooke Reiboldt’s first-inning RBI single provided the only offense of the night as Union County defeated Eastern Hancock 1-0 in the Class 2A Sectional 41 title game at Cambridge City Lincoln. The win meant back-to-back sectional crowns for the Patriots, who bested EH 2-1 in nine innings 12 months ago in this same championship game.
Union County, which was defeated by Eastern twice on April 7 (11-2, 3-2), won each of its three 2012 sectional contests by 1-0 decisions.
“The best team didn’t win today,” EH coach Jack Heiden said, “But they played better than we did today.”
With one out, Haylee Cooper crushed a double over the head of EH center-fielder Taylor Denny. An out later, Peters singled in what would be the only run of the game for either team.
EH attempted to answer in the bottom half of the opening frame, but would leave runners standing at second and third following Emily Reger’s groundout to first.
