The Mt. Vernon volleyball team handled Howe in its Sectional 26 quarterfinal match at Brebeuf Thursday, 25-9, 25-4, 25-2.
The Marauders take on Guerin Catholic in the sectional semifinals today at 11 a.m.
Leaders for MV were Ellie Balbach (19 assists, six kills, three aces), Lexi Reasor (six kills, six aces), Mary Grace Ertel (nine kills, two aces), Emily White (seven assists, six aces) and Amelia Spoor (four kills, four aces).
With a win against Guerin, Mt. Vernon would advance to the sectional finals against the winner of 3A No. 3 Chatard and 3A No. 8 Brebeuf today at 7 p.m.
G-C routs Richmond
Greenfield-Central swept Richmond in its Sectional 9 quarterfinal match Thursday at G-C, 25-23, 25-22-25-23.
The Cougars (23-11) face Pendleton Heights in the sectional semifinals today at 11 a.m.
Rachel Irbe (18 kills, four digs), Megan Bradley (30 assists, nine digs), Alex Colclazier (19 digs), Caitey Sosnowski (three aces, seven digs) and Jordan Bunch (six kills, six digs) paced G-C.
“It was not a stellar performance by the Lady Cougars but just enough to get the job done! We had some shining moments and some great hustle plays, but overall as a team we just weren’t sharp and pumped up to play,” G-C coach Rita Rouse said. “It’s sectional...what more motivation do you need? Everybody should be at the top of their game and fired up to play! We have to be much more focused and united Saturday.”
The other semifinal match pits 4A No. 1 New Castle against Anderson. The two semifinals winners will play at 7 p.m. today.
Royals top Bulldogs
Eastern Hancock took care of Centerville in its Sectional 41 quarterfinal match Thursday at EH, 25-20, 25-15, 25-21.
The Royals (25-9) meet Union County in the sectional semifinals today at 12:30 p.m.
Jordian Eastes (34 assists), Frannie Stephenson (19 kills), Hannah Best (five aces, nine digs), Lauren Harmon (seven kills) and Melissa Bedell (seven kills) contributed for the Royals.
The first semifinal of the day is Northeastern against Cambridge City Lincoln. Semifinal victors will play in the championship match at 7 p.m.
