Beech Grove has two winning seasons since the start of the new millennium and has never hoisted a sectional championship trophy.
Doug Armstrong knows better than to take the Hornets lightly, however. After all, he spent a season coaching some of the current players.
The Sagarin ratings list host Mt. Vernon (7-2) as a 29-point favorite in its Sectional 21 quarterfinal tilt opposite visiting Beech Grove (2-7) Friday at 7 p.m. The winner faces the Greenfield-Central (1-9)-Muncie Central (6-3) victor on Nov. 1.
In 2010, Armstrong coached the Hornets to a 1-9 finish in his lone season at the school, which is located less than 10 miles southeast of downtown Indianapolis. Armstrong was hired at MV prior to the 2011 season.
“I really enjoyed my time there,” Armstrong recalled of his one year at Beech Grove. “I couldn’t get a teaching job there, that was the main reason I left before we had a chance to build a program.
“The kids were good — the current seniors were freshmen when I was there. So, I know they have a solid core group of seniors that are good football players.”
