Royals 'outhustled' in 62-52 conference loss

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Possessing a game-high lead of 13 points as the third quarter wound down Tuesday night, the temptation was there for Eastern Hancock to put it in cruise control.

And while the Royals couldn’t resist letting off the throttle, the North Decatur boys basketball team floored it in the final eight minutes and change, and left the Royals in the dust in a Mid-Hoosier Conference showdown.

The Chargers emphatically reversed their deficit and outscored EH 32-12 in the fourth quarter, going on to steal a 62-52 win.

As EH (2-5, 1-2 MHC) was unraveling to the tune of seven turnovers and 2-for-10 shooting in the final quarter, ND (2-5, 1-2 MHC) was showing more urgency.

The Chargers more than doubled their total point output for the first three quarters by making 7-of-10 shots from the field and drawing numerous fouls, and in the process hitting on 17-of-20 free throws in the fourth.

“We just didn’t take care of the ball,” EH coach Aaron Spaulding said. “We committed way too many turnovers, we didn’t guard, they outhustled us and we were playing not to lose. And when you play that way, you lose.”

The Royals led from the 2-minute mark of the first and were ahead by a baker’s dozen on two occasions, the last being 40-27 with a half-minute to go in the third.

From that point until the 5:52 mark of the fourth, ND proceeded to run off 12 straight points and twice could have gone ahead. EH staved it off, but it turned out to be temporary.

ND knotted it at 43 with 2:35 to go on a steal and bucket by Jason Kirchhoff, then 58 seconds later went back ahead on a back-door feed from Zach Johnson to Brock Ricke.

Soon after, the Royals broke down and the Chargers quickly built the lead up to 51-43. Spencer Gilbert fouled Kirchhoff hard and picked up a technical on top of the personal; those meant Gilbert had five fouls. Kirchhoff and John Hammersmith both hit pairs of foul shots to give ND the eight-point cushion.

EH could get no closer than 53-50, as the Chargers were perfect on their final eight free throws.

Hammersmith led all scorers with 29 points and Kirchhoff added 13.

“We’ve got to do a better job of playing with a lead when we get pressure,” Spaulding said. “When they’re trapping like that, you’ve just got to take care of the ball. When you turn the ball over like we did and you give them a chance to win, all of a sudden you’re in a dogfight.”

Victor Vincz, in his third game back from an injury, scored 21 for the Royals. Cody Wallace, whom like Gilbert would foul out, added 10 points.

“The main thing is, we’ve got to learn from it,” Spaulding said. “You just can’t say ‘oh well,’ you’ve got to learn from it. We’ve got to keep working. We’ve played in seven ball games and we’ve been in every one of them, but we just haven’t done a good job of winning them.”

Notes: While the teams combined for 40 free-throw attempts, only one occurred in the first half, a miss by ND’s Luke Badgley ... Dustin Davidson scored 18 points and Cole Fout 14 as the Royals’ JV team defeated ND 43-24 ... EH is off until Dec. 27, when it hosts Greenfield-Central in the day round of the Hancock County Tournament.
