Christian Noble joined a short, distinguished list of Mt. Vernon cross country runners Saturday with his triumph at the Delta Regional.
The Marauders’ sophomore finished the 5k/3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 34 seconds to become just the third MV runner to claim a regional title, and first since 1985.
Jeff Wheeler (1983 and 1984) and Mike Mundy (1985) were the previous MV regional cross country champs and both harriers went on to earn all-state honors. Wheeler won a state title in 1983 and Mundy finished second in the state finals the following year to Scott Williams of Ben Davis.
Noble’s only challenge Saturday came from teammate Aaron Rush, who finished runner-up in 16:46. Union City’s Seth Fowler was third (16:51), while three other Marauders earned top-20 ribbons to help the MV claim the team title as well.
“The course was relatively firm after a rain all night and only really affected them on the turns where they had to slow,” MV coach Bruce Kendall said of the cold, damp conditions. “Our biggest obstacle was the tall grass that wasn’t there several weeks before when we ran the course, but overall we were the most improved team from that ‘trial’ regional three weeks ago.”
At the Delta Invite on Sept. 28, MV won the team title with 32 points, while Rush and Noble finished 1-2.
