GREENFIELD — Since opening in 2009, the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen has been a busy place. Occupying the front half of the building at 202 E. Main St., the kitchen feeds dozens of Hancock County’s hungry each weekday.
Until the retirement of local attorney Tom Williams last October, however, the back of the building was another story. Williams, the building’s owner, quietly operated his legal practice out of an office behind the soup kitchen – a space he had donated to the nonprofit.
Williams extended his generosity, deeding the entire building to the organization in March.
With that gift, however, came a great burden. While organizers at the soup kitchen were thrilled for the donation of much-needed space, years of neglect left much of the newly donated space in disrepair.
