The New Palestine girls’ track and field team broke a pair of 20-year-old school records recently at the Zionsville Invitational.

Corinne Zehner’s was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.57, snapping an NP record held by former state champion Lori Swegman in the 1970s. Zehner also won the 100-meter hurdles.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Lauren Joray, Lauren Kehrt, Nicole Fluegel and Zehner crossed the finish line first in a time of 4:02.97, besting the old school record by more than two seconds.

As a team, NP was third in the meet and Mt. Vernon took fourth.

MV’s Kaylen Jones won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.93, breaking her own school record.

Olivia Coleman was second in the long jump and third in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes.

“We had a great meet in the cold weather,” MV coach Tim Leonard said. “We will now focus on the triple crown (Hancock County, conference and sectional meets).”

G-C boys 3rd in Greensburg; MV’s White, Davis set records

The Greenfield-Central boys’ track and field team placed third in the Greensburg Invitational on Saturday, its last tune-up before the county meet on Wednesday.

Matt Dickerson took first in both hurdle events (110, 300). Tyler Wilcher (3,200-meter run), Tyler Beeson (shot put) and Chris Sosnowski (discus) were winners as well.

Mt. Vernon placed seventh at the Zionsville Invitational. Corey White (200-meter dash; 23.09) and Isaac Davis (300-meter hurdles; 41.46) set new school records.

“Zionsville was a tough meet for us and the first time this season we came out on the short end of the deal,” MV coach Bruce Kendall said. “We have been able to win meets through scoring in all events, but at Zionsville in the 10 team format it really showed what a paper tiger we are in the big meets.”

New Palestine finished ninth at Zionsville. Dillon Pike (800-meter run) as well as the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays came in second.
