It’s only Week 2 of the Hoosier Heritage Conference slate, but the New Palestine-Delta battle on Friday could be the conference game of the year.
Since 2006, every HHC title team has finished 7-0. And, going back to 1995 when HHC football began, no champ has ended the year with more than one conference loss.
In other words, the loser between Class 4A No. 10 New Palestine (3-0, 1-0 HHC) at 3A No. 3 Delta (3-0, 1-0 HHC) will be at a serious disadvantage, no longer in control of their own league championship destiny.
The matchup pairs multifaceted offenses.
Delta quarterback Cade Jones has thrown for 493 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions, with Jalen Robinson (16 receptions, 400 yards) a favorite target. On the ground, the Eagles’ top two rushers have combined for 477 yards.
“In order to score points, you’ve got to be able to find out what the defensive weaknesses are and find out what formation is going to put you in the most successful position to win a football game,” New Palestine coach Kyle Ralph explained. “And Delta has shown the ability to do a lot of different things and a lot of good things out of a lot of formations, and that’s why they’ve had some success.
“They’ve scored touchdowns out of about every formation they’ve run this year, so they’re versatile in what they do.”
