The Mt. Vernon boys cross country team took second in a tri-meet with Brownsburg and Fishers Monday.
The Marauders notched a score of 18, behind No. 14 Fishers (six) and Brownsburg (21).
The tandem of Brandt True and Christian Noble were MV’s top finisher (fourth), followed by Andrew Thaxton/Aaron Rush (ninth) and Andrew Boyle/Brendan O’Bryhim (12th).
“The boys beat Brownsburg on their effort, but there wasn’t a lot of pace running just gut running,” Mt. Vernon coach Bruce Kendall said. “We kind of need a little more pace with the guts. Thaxton and O’Bryhim really held off a fierce finish by the Bulldogs for the narrow win.
“Fishers’ boys were just too much, but I don’t think we embarrassed ourselves.”
As for the girls, the Marauders fell to Brownsburg 10-12.
Kayley Walkey/Morgan Hayse took second, Samantha Sanders/Macie Dungan were third and Leah Chaves/Lindsey Eckart placed seventh.
“I didn’t feel like our girls really raced other than Sanders the first mile and Hayse the second mile, we just kind of ran the race rather than raced,” Kendall offered. “Then again, we don’t exactly have a lot of veterans so it is logical that most were kind of feeling it out. We will have to do better at our coaching on that part.”
Mt. Vernon is at the Carmel Invitational Saturday.
