Greenfield tennis trumps Scecina




The New Palestine volleyball team swept Guerin Catholic 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 Wednesday night, moving to 2-0 on the season.

The Dragons’ balanced offense was paced by freshman Allison Dennemann, who had 10 kills. Junior Taylor Lawson added nine kills. Freshman Mia Long had six kills and three blocks.

NP pulled away late in the first and second sets, and then jumped ahead 5-0 with five straight service points — including two aces — from Rachael Wernimont in the third set.

“We came together and really played as a team tonight,” New Palestine coach Kelli Whitaker said. “There were many bright spots from many players. The JV also played a solid match.”

The Dragons JV won 25-22, 25-23.

Boys tennis

Greenfield-Central 4, Scecina 1

Zak Lawhorn, Thomas Spears and Dylan Wilburn scored straight-set singles victories for G-C in its first match Tuesday.

Nate Real and Tommy Graham won 6-4, 6-4 at doubles.

Mt. Vernon 4, Chatard 1

The Marauders were led by winners Mark Alvarado (No. 1 singles), Grant Williams (No. 2 singles), Matt Hays (No. 3 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Beck and Brendon Ware.

Alvarado survived a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (1) match. Hays won 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Beck and Ware also went three sets, prevailing 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Williams won 6-2, 6-4.

“Very proud of our team,” MV coach Gabe Muterspaugh said. “Alvarado, Williams and Hays were outstanding. Kept composure and closed it out.”

Girls golf

Mt. Vernon 182, Shenandoah 191, Delta 225

The Mt. Vernon girls golf team improved to 9-0 on the year, led by co-medalists Molly Yee and Bailey Fleming. The Marauders’ duo carded 42s.

Briley Wills (47) and Maeve McCafferty (51) added to the win at Old Oakland, MV’s home course.

Greenfield-Central 193, New Castle 201

At the Westwood Golf Club, Makenzie Fisk (41) and Lindsey McCord (45) led the visiting Cougars to victory.

It was Fisk’s fourth medalist honor so far this young season.

Megan Garner (53) and Kim Miles (54) chipped in for G-C.

Girls soccer

Franklin Central 5, Greenfield-Central 1

The host Flashes led 2-0 at halftime then added three more scores after the break.

G-C will open Hoosier Heritage Conference play Monday when Mt. Vernon visits.

Boys soccer

New Palestine to try  again Sept. 4

The Dragons’ previously postponed match at Guerin Catholic has been rescheduled as a varsity only contest on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
