The Mt. Vernon girls’ cross country team came home with a victory last night in a seven-team field at New Castle.
Jessica Grubb (22:50) placed third for MV, followed by Morgan Hayse (fourth), Ariana Sandefur (seventh), Lindsey Eckart (12th) and Samantha Sanders (15th).
In the boys’ race, the Marauders finished second behind Pendleton Heights in a seven-team competition. Brandt True (18:10) was sixth, followed by Andrew Thaxton (eighth), Taylor VanWinkle (10th), Andrew Boyle (11th) and Aaron Rush (22nd).
“We had not raced in more than a week and it showed. True showed that there was more to him after going a season-best on a hilly course,” MV coach Bruce Kendall said. “The girls were able to win without (Elizabeth) Cook and we finished with our No. 5 runner being our No. 1.”
