Prep Wrap: Defense guides New Pal to third win

Behind a staunch defensive effort, the New Palestine girls basketball team picked up its third win of the season Tuesday, a 43-36 decision over Beech Grove.

Haley Stratman notched 16 points for the Dragons, her 10th game in double figures.

NP (3-13), which also garnered its first road victory, limited the Hornets (0-16) to single digits in the first and fourth quarters.

Emma Laughlin added 13 points and four rebounds for the Dragons. Natalie Kehrt had nine points and three rebounds.

New Palestine hosts Rushville (13-2) Saturday in a Hoosier Heritage Conference tilt. The Dragons are 1-4 in HHC play; the Lions are 5-1.

Girls basketball

Greenfield-Central 49, Muncie Central 47

The Cougars rallied in the fourth quarter Tuesday for their third victory in a row.

G-C trailed 31-23 at half and 38-36 after the third frame.

Savannah Hart tallied 14 points for visitors. Shelby Oldham (12 points), Shelby Davis (eight points) and Brooke Bell (five points) contributed for the blue and gold.

G-C (7-9, 3-2 HHC) is at Mt. Vernon (13-3, 5-0 HHC) in a conference showdown Friday.

Mt. Vernon 70, Guerin Catholic 45

Rachel Houck scored a career-best 26 points as Mt. Vernon cruised Tuesday night on the road.

Houck also had five rebounds, five assists and six steals for the Marauders, who jumped out to a 14-4 advantage after a quarter and were ahead 40-18 at halftime.

Sydney Shelton notched 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ellie Balbach registered a season-high nine points and five rebounds.


MV routs Rushville

The Mt. Vernon girls swimming and diving team handled Rushville Tuesday, 150-22.

Individual winners for the Marauders were Micaela Elmore (200 freestyle), Aimee Arkenau (200 individual medley), Jessica Blackburn (50 freestyle), Laura Cochran (diving), Gloria Gonzales (100 butterfly), Maddie Powell (100 freestyle), Ciara Tyndal (500 freestyle), Haley Moore (100 backstroke) and Nicole Dowd (100 breaststroke).

On the boys side, the black and gold also won 150-22.

Dixon Tierney (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke), Daniel Majors (200 individual medley), Derrick Keene (50 freestyle), Zach Ball (diving), Cole Case (100 butterfly), Corey Beck (100 freestyle), Brandon Lindman (500 freestyle) and Matthew Bauchert (100 backstroke) prevailed for the Marauders.

MV is at Pendleton Heights for a dual meet today.

Cougars lap Lawrence Central

The Greenfield-Central girls swimming and diving team dispatched Lawrence Central Tuesday, 113-65.

Individual winners for the Cougars (5-4-1) were Carly Fernandes (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke), Taylor Johnson (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Taylor Cermak (100 freestyle).

The 200 medley relay of Fernandes, Olivia Stirn, Johnson and Cermak in addition to the 400 freestyle relay of Johnson, Hannah Reynolds, Cermak and Fernandes won.

“The girls did a nice job tonight swimming some last events before sectional lineups are due,” G-C girls coach Emily Logan said. “I’m very pleased for all of them on another win.”

As for the boys, they topped LC 121-64.

Cody Wilburn (200 freestyle), Bailey Willoughby (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly), Patrick Stutz (50 freestyle), Drew Logan (100 freestyle) and Spencer Young (500 freestyle) were individual victors for G-C (7-1).

The 200 freestyle relay (Brenden Gill, Luke Jones, Logan, Wilburn) and 400 freestyle relay (Logan, Jared Tomer, Jones, Wilburn) also prevailed.

“We posted some great times from a lot of the guys who did not participate in conference, which is great to see that momentum carried over to the whole team,” G-C coach Mark Logan said of his squad, which took home its third straight HHC crown on Saturday.

The Cougars host Shelbyville tonight.
