The Eastern Hancock boys basketball team led nearly the entire way in its season-opening game at Centerville Wednesday, only to fall 45-37.
The Royals took an early 14-4 advantage, led 19-14 at halftime and took a 28-24 edge into the final quarter. But the Bulldogs outscored common sectional foe Royals 21-9 in the final quarter for the win.
In last season’s opener, Centerville grabbed a 44-42 overtime win over the Royals.
Braden Suttle scored 20 points Wednesday to pace Centerville. Eli Callahan added nine for the Bulldogs (1-0).
Garrett Hancock paced the Royals with nine points.
Eastern Hancock will visit Indian Creek Saturday in the Royals’ Mid-Hoosier Conference debut as part of a girls-boys doubleheader.
The girls JV game will begin at 4 p.m., followed by boys JV (5:20), girls varsity (6:45) and the boys varsity tilt (8).
The game will mark the Indian Creeks boys season-opener. The IC girls are 4-2 and the Royals are 2-1.
Greenfield sweeps Franklin Central
The G-C boys edged Franklin Central 96-90 Tuesday.
“The guys really stepped it up the second half of the meet after being down four points after diving,” coach Mark Logan said. “The divers took first, second and third to bring us back into contention.”
Individual winners for the Cougars included Drew Logan (200 free, 500 free), Nathan Graber (diving), Josh Cummins (100 fly), Patrick Stutz (100 free, 100 breast).
The girls meet was nearly as close, with the Cougars earning a 99-86 win.
“The girls fought through every event in this meet,” coach Emily Logan said.
“Our divers took first, second and third to give a great advantage.”
Winners for G-C included Carly Fernandes (200 IM, 100 back), Taylor Johnson (50 free, 100 fly) and Emily Fuchs (diving).
Marauders double-dip Richmond
Mt. Vernon opened its dual meet season Tuesday night with a double win over Richmond. The MV boys won 116.5-68.5 and girls took a 115-70 victory.
Winning events for the Marauders were Haley Moore in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Dixon Tierney in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, Maddie Powell in the 50 freestyle, Emily McKinney in diving and Zach Ball in diving.
Other winners included Gloria Gonzales in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Eve Gonzales in the 500 freestyle, Michael Bauchert in the 500 freestyle, Cole Case in the 100 backstroke, Olivia Shannon in the 100 breaststroke, and Brisco Wood in the 100 breaststroke.
Westfield 68, New Palestine 27
The Dragons fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss but tallied a season high in points against No. 10 Westfield on the road Tuesday night.
Haley Stratman led the Dragons with 12 points and five rebounds. Carly Hackler had eight rebounds. Katlyn Keele also had five boards. Emma Laughlin added six points, while Natalie Kehrt scored four.
The Dragons play Tuesday at home against Arlington.
