New Palestine thrower Josh McKean was added to the boys track and field State Finals field Friday.
McKean finished fifth in the shot put at the Connersville Regional Thursday, but only the top three regional placers move on to state.
However, McKean was added to the state field in order bring the number of participants in the shot put competition to 27.
McKean joins teammate Chris Poturalski and Greenfield-Central’s Tyler Beeson at the State Finals, which will be held Saturday, June 7 at Indiana University.
Beeson, competing in his third State Finals, is seeded sixth in the discus and eighth in the shot put; Poturalski is 13th in the 400; and McKean is 18th in the shot put. Poturalski and McKean are competing in their first state competitions.
Also, former New Palestine middle schooler and current Indianapolis Cathedral sophomore Rayder Hobbs qualified for the State Finals as part of the Irish 400 meter relay squad. Hobbs and his Cathedral teammates are seeded 17th in 43.08 seconds.
Marian University senior and Mt. Vernon graduate Chris Hanson recently wrapped up his track career at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
Hanson, Luke Briggs, Ben Hendricks and Douglas Taylor guided Marian’s 3,200 relay to a sixth-place finish at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala. The quartet was seeded 12th going into the event.
Hanson, a conference and sectional champion at MV, took sixth in the NAIA national championships in the 800 as a sophomore.
