GREENFIELD — An inmate who was serving time for battery is now on the run and has threatened to shoot police if they catch up to him.
Jon Kanieski, 32, of Greenfield, was serving time at the Hancock County Jail on a battery conviction but was transferred to the Hancock County Community Corrections work-release program earlier this week, Sheriff Mike Shepherd said.
Kanieski left community corrections around 8 a.m. Thursday morning with permission to go out and look for a job.
“That apparently wasn’t his intent,” Shepherd said.
Kanieski was scheduled to return by 12:30 p.m. the same day but never came back to the facility.
A confidential informant told a community corrections field officer that Kanieski picked up a gun after leaving the facility and has made a comment that he is prepared to use it if police try to stop him.
Kanieski is believed to be driving a green 1995 Ford Explorer with plate number RUJ809. He is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 260 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone who sees Kanieski or his vehicle is asked to call 911. They should not approach Kanieski, Shepherd said.
