BLOOMINGTON — As the careers of some of Hancock County’s most decorated track and field athletes culminated Friday night at the IHSAA Girls’ Track and Field State Finals on the campus of Indiana University, two freshmen, Greenfield-Central’s Regan Lewis and Mt. Vernon’s Olivia Coleman, stole the spotlight and made it known that they will be heard from for years to come.
And for the departed, New Palestine’s Sonya Napariu closed her time as a Dragon by recording two podium finishes at IU’s Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex — the Maryland recruit placed fifth in the shot put and ninth in the discus. Four of her teammates, Lauren Joray, Nicole Fluegel, Lauren Kehrt and Corinne Zehner, took seventh in the 1600 relay, completing the Hancock County All-State contingent. (Top nine finishers are All-State).
Entering the state finals, Lewis was seeded first — along with North Central’s Morayo Akande — as both had season-best leaps of 5-7.
