GREENFIELD — The recent shooting of a local police officer has reinvigorated fundraising efforts for an emergency relief fund for public safety employees and their families.

Officials dipped into the Hancock County Public Safety Survivors Fund for the first time last month when Matt Fox, a Fortville officer, was shot multiple times during a traffic stop. His assailant, James Lockhart III, 27, of Indianapolis, was later killed after a gun battle with police.

As Fox, now 30, lay recovering in the critical care unit at IU Health Methodist Hospital, his fellow officers began to talk about how they might lend financial aid to those who wanted to stay at Fox’s side.
