GREENFIELD — A new bond issue for county vehicles is on hold so Hancock County’s executive branch can research whether the purchase is necessary.

Hancock County Commissioners Tuesday discussed a bond issue of nearly $2 million. The Hancock County Council last week decided 3-2 to move the proposal forward to purchase 12 new dump trucks for the county highway department and a few other items.

Now, the commissioners must decide whether a bond is necessary. If they agree to the bond issue, it would go back to the council for a public hearing and final vote.

Council members say the move would free up money annually to repair roads, but opponents say taxpayers need a break and the county shouldn’t continue to take on debt.
