GREENFIELD — Well, all I can really say about the Rebel Race, held in Greenfield over the weekend, is that I tried everything.

The three-mile event, half obstacle course and half run, took place at Earl and Barb Smith’s dairy farm Saturday. Along with a healthy dose of mud and beer, the race brought with it more than a thousand participants from around the Midwest – many of whom have become devotees of these increasingly popular “mud runs.”

I was not one of them. While I’ve run in a number of more traditional races, this was my first crack at really anything involving obstacles or mud since the days of elementary school summer camp.

While camp was a good time, I’ve never considered myself particularly outdoorsy. But as a runner, this event seemed like the perfect way to try something just a little bit outside my comfort zone, which is exactly what organizers are promoting.
