NEW PALESTINE — New Palestine’s football team has a large board registering the team’s shutouts hanging in the locker room.
And, for the last season and a half, it has had one empty line at the bottom, waiting to be filled.
While the Dragons had come close, they hadn’t quite filled it. Until Friday night. NP’s defense again dominated, shutting down Shelbyville’s running game and holdilng the Golden Bears to 51 total yards in a 44-0 victory over the Bears on Senior Night at Kelso Stadium.
The victory improved NP to 7-0 and 4-0 in HHC play. Shelbyville fell to 4-3 (2-2).
The Red Rage defense forced three turnovers and even got in on the scoring itself, with Nick Brickens leading a gang tackle to register a safety in the closing minutes of the game.
“Those guys had our defensive calls and coverages down pat all week in practice. I’m really proud of them. I’m proud of them. It being senior night, we had a lot of guys playing, and some in positions they hadn’t played much before. We even had a couple of mental busts, and it speaks volumes to how good some of our guys are on defense to make up for some of those mistakes,” NP coach Kyle Ralph said.
