Lower transportation costs helped

In good news for New Palestine athletes and their families, it will cost less this school year to take part in sports.

The school announced Tuesday that its’ athletic participation fee for 2012-13 will be $80, a reduction of $20.

The fee is a combination of a one-time $40 participation fee (good for unlimited sports) and a one-time $40 transportation fee. Last year’s transportation fee was $60.

“We’re in a situation where we can go ahead and make everything work at that ($80) number,” New Palestine athletic director Al Cooper said.

Lower fuel costs were part of the reason New Palestine was able to reduce the sports fee. School corporations typically lock in fuel prices on annual contracts.

“It’s important to do what’s right,” Cooper said. “We’re going to be able to make ends meet on our end with transportation costs. And this will be a good thing for everybody.”

It will now cost New Palestine athletes $80 to participate in unlimited sports, making for the second lowest fee in Hancock County.

Eastern Hancock does not charge a participating fee for athletes; only a one-time $75 transportation charge.

Greenfield-Central’s fee is $50 per sport, plus a one-time $60 transportation fee, making for a total one-sport cost of $110.

And Mt. Vernon charges $225 per sport, plus a $40 transportation charge, or $265 to play a single sport.
