Hancock County will be well-represented at the IHSAA Girls State Track and Field Finals next week in Bloomington.
New Palestine and Greenfield-Central combined to win five individual championships at the Shelbyville Regional Tuesday, and several other Dragons and Cougars qualified for the state finals with top-three finishes.
At Shelbyville, NP senior Sonya Napariu won the shot put and discus competitions with throws of 42 feet and 122 feet, six inches, respectively. It was quite an improvement for Napariu, who didn’t advance out of last year’s regional in the shot put with a sixth-place finish on a throw of 38-7.5. She only moved on last season in the discus, where she placed third at the regional at 121-3.
“It was definitely on my mind,” Napariu said Tuesday night while enjoying a celebratory trip to Steak ‘n’ Shake with senior teammates Corinne Zehner and Nicole Fluegel. “I remember the feeling last year (in the shot put) and I made sure — with training extra hours all year — that I was not going to feel that again.”
