Mt. Vernon's Moore makes Indiana All-Stars

FORTVILLE — A healthy Erica Moore was too much for the Indiana All-Stars to pass up.

Moore, a Mt. Vernon senior, was selected for the 2014 All-Star squad on Thursday. The six-foot center missed most of the Marauders’ season recovering from knee surgery, then returned for the team’s final nine games.

“By the sectional, she wasn’t quite there, but she made a huge improvement from the time she first came back,” MV coach Julie Shelton said. “By sectionals, she was looking pretty good.”

Moore, a Purdue commit, was under a minutes limit when she rejoined the lineup, and she averaged 8 points and 4.6 rebounds. She played roughly 20 minutes in the Class 4A Marauders’ 43-41 sectional final loss to Anderson.

Moore will join Miss Basketball Whitney Jennings (Iowa) of Logansport and 11 other Hoosiers in a weekend tilt vs. Kentucky June 13-14, with the opener at Transylvania University in Lexington followed by a visit to Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The seniors will face the Indiana Junior All-Stars in a pair of warmups June 9 and 11 at sites to be determined.

All four dates will be doubleheaders with the Indiana Boys All-Stars.

Moore missed seven games of her junior campaign with a meniscus tear in her right knee, but she came back in time to help the Marauders win a Class 3A state title. Moore was a member of the Junior Core Six All-Stars.

Cysts developed in Moore’s right knee prior to this season, leading to the second surgery that kept her sidelined.

Moore’s successful rehab and her unique skill set resulted in a spot on the All-Star squad, her coach said.

“I just think that she is such a big and strong player, you’re just not going to find someone with that kind of body and ability very often,” noted Shelton, who coached the 2006 Indiana All-Stars.

Moore is the fifth Girls All-Star from Mt. Vernon following Jessica Brown (2012), Johna Goff (2000), Barb Skinner (1979) and Liz Skinner (1978).

Eric Thornton of Norwell is this year’s All-Stars coach. Boys All-Stars selections haven’t been announced.
