FORTVILLE — They weren’t supposed to win. Not a pair of sophomores against a New Palestine doubles team that hadn’t dropped a set to them in two matches this season. And not coming off a semifinal loss to Greenfield-Central in which they again failed to win a set.
Somehow, Ellen Wuerch and Rachael Kammerer found a way. In what was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the Mt. Vernon girls’ tennis team, Wuerch and Kammerer helped the Marauders stun New Palestine Friday to win the sectional championship.
The Dragons were the defending sectional title holders; they followed up this season with a Hancock County title on April 21 and, in a head-to-head battle with Mt. Vernon May 7, the Dragons cruised to a 4-1 win.
