GREENFIELD — Abby Poole knew it would take an exceptional round to win Tuesday’s Hancock County Golf Championship.
The New Palestine junior responded with a program-record 35 to edge Mt. Vernon’s Ellen Wuerch for the county individual crown at Arrowhead Golf Course.
It was the second straight title for Poole, who won last year’s county meet with a 42.
“I knew it would take something in the 30s to do it this year,” Poole said. “All the girls in the county have been playing great this year.”
“But I like competition because it pushes me. I came out here twice for practice rounds because I knew it would be tough. It kind of drives me to improve.”
Poole’s 35 on the Arrowhead front nine broke the school record of 36 established by Emily Raymond in 2005, and the Dragons’ 168 Tuesday was a new nine-hole team record.
But it wasn’t enough to keep the Marauders from their second straight team county title.
Wuerch, who led Poole by one stroke heading to No. 7, finished with a 37. She was joined by teammates Molly Yee (40), Bailey Fleming (40) and Hannah Yee (43) in earning first-place medals with a collective 160.
Greenfield-Central (189) and Eastern Hancock (208) rounded out the field.
