NEW CASTLE — Sharing the same floor with a volleyball state power Tuesday night, the young Marauders weren’t scared or in awe of their opposition.
And though its season ended, Mt. Vernon’s two-year rebuilding project appears to be complete. The black and gold can now turn its attention to 2014 and return to its usual winning ways.
4A No. 3 New Castle swept MV 25-17, 25-14, 25-11 in the quarterfinals of the Sectional 9 tournament Tuesday.
The host Trojans (26-3) advanced to play Pendleton Heights (18-10), a 3-1 quarterfinal winner over Connersville, in Saturday’s first semifinal at 11 a.m.
Thursday, Anderson (3-15) squares off opposite 4A No. 5 Yorktown (28-2), and Richmond (7-10) faces Greenfield-Central (22-10) in the final two quarterfinal contests. The winners play in Saturday’s second semifinal.
The Sectional 9 championship match is 6 p.m. Saturday.
Following back-to-back sectional titles in 2009 and 2010, MV went 23-10 in 2011. This year, coach Kris Lashaway’s squad finished 9-21, its second-straight year under .500 after posting an 8-25 mark in 2012.
The past two years have been an aberration for what is normally a successful program, one that has as many sectional crowns (10) as Eastern Hancock, Greenfield-Central and New Palestine combined.
