FORTVILLE — Mt. Vernon did what it does best in its sectional game Friday against Beech Grove — run the football all night long.
The Class 4A No. 10 Marauders dashed for a 49-14 win over the Hornets in their Sectional 22 first round match. For the third time in five weeks, the Marauders have scored at least 46 points in a game. Mt. Vernon had been averaging 30.8 ppg coming into Friday’s game.
Marauders coach Doug Armstrong had previously coached the Hornets back in 2010, going 1-9 in one season. That gave him some background on what to expect from Beech Grove.
“They just came in to (class) 4A, so it takes some adjustments for when they jump up classes,” Armstrong said. “They gave a really good battle in the first half. They’re going to be a good football team in the future.”
It didn’t take long for the Marauders to get started, scoring on their first play of their first drive. Running back Alec Lohman took it to the house on a 55-yard touchdown run to put Mt. Vernon up 6-0. MV led 28-7 at halftime.
