GREENFIELD — A woman who told police she believed her husband was dangerous is now being held on suspicion of shooting him to death.
Local farmer Gary Roberts, 57, lay dead in the basement of his rural Hancock County home Friday afternoon, just a few hours after his wife, Elizabeth Roberts, reported her husband was having a mental breakdown and might hurt himself or someone else. Fearing the potential for violence, police were making plans to raid the home when the fatal shot was fired.
The grim events started to unfold when Elizabeth Roberts, 56, came with a family friend to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department around 8:30 a.m. She was clearly distraught, Detective Capt. Jeff Rasche said. Her husband had been acting erratically in recent weeks, she told police. And she feared things were getting worse.
She said her husband had numerous guns and explosives in their home and had been making threats and talking of suicide, police said.
