'You can't thank somebody enough': Zach Strodtman (left) received a kidney donation from his longtime friend Evan Sutherlin earlier this year. They are currently continuing to heal from the surgery, but life has returned to normal for the pair.

There will always be an uncommon link between long-time friends Zach Strodtman and Evan Sutherlin.

In March, Sutherlin donated one of his kidneys to Strodtman, who was suffering from medical problems that could have become severe.

“I was diagnosed with renal failure in July of last year,” Strodtman said.

The 22-year-olds — both Mt. Vernon High School graduates from the Class of 2008 — have been friends since their time together at Mt. Comfort Elementary. They became better friends at the end of their high school years and maintained that friendship after. So when Strodtman received his diagnosis last summer, Sutherlin became aware of it immediately.
