MUNCIE — As the awards ceremony for the Delta cross country regional was going on Saturday, Mt. Vernon coach Bruce Kendall was at another ceremony — his daughter’s wedding.
Kendall later was happy to know the Marauder boys and girls teams will have another meet to run, this Saturday’s semistate at New Haven.
Both squads advanced out of the races at the Muncie Sportsplex with plenty to spare. The boys were second to Frankton (37 points) with 98 points and the girls third with 87 points, trailing Pendleton Heights (29) and Jay County (85). The top five teams and top 15 individuals qualified for semistate.
“The boys and girls both ran the best they’ve run all season, and that’s good,” assistant coach Tim Leonard said. “The best time you can run well is at the regional.”
Senior Elizabeth Cook was MV’s highest overall finisher and only ribbon recipient (top-15). She placed sixth, at 20:10.88 for five kilometers.
Sophomore Jessica Grubb held 19th and the Marauders’ other scorers were close behind; junior Samantha Sanders in 21st, freshman Arianna Sandefur 27th and sophomore Morgan Hayse 28th. All five of the Maraduers posted season-best times.
The top MV boys also kept up with each other, with three getting into the top 20.
