Luncheon to feature shopping spree

The Greenfield Christian Women’s Club Luncheon will feature a “Spring Shopping Extravaganza” on Tuesday, March 12, at American Legion Post 119.

The event is set for 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. The buffet opens at 11:45 a.m. Cost is $8.50 inclusive.

A vendor fair will include wares from 13 local vendors. Shopping times are 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Books, jewelry, makeup, handcrafted items, Tupperware and more will be available for purchase.

There will also be extra door prize drawings.

Inspirational speaker Diane Dassing’s topic will be “A Tale Without the Fairy.”

For lunch and nursery reservations, call Melissa at 861-8687 or Lynnette at 861-9891 by Friday, March 8.

Reservations should be honored, canceled or transferred.

The legion is at 275 Center St., Greenfield.

Storytimes planned at Greenfield library

The following activities and programs are offered by the Hancock County Public Library. Register online at www.hcplibrary.org.

Read across America

Kids ages 2-8 are encouraged to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 1. Listen to stories read by Patrolman Chris Borgmann and his K-9 partner, Eragon, from the Greenfield Police Department, then make a craft to take home.

These events support the National Education Association’s signature program, “Read across America.”

Storytimes in Greenfield

Children who are read to from an early age have larger vocabularies and better language skills when they start school. Sign up for weekly storytimes in Greenfield. The series begins March 4 and ends April 11. Register online (beginning Feb.19) or call 462-5141, ext. 238:

Baby, birth to 24 months (with a caregiver) – 9:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays; 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays.

Toddler, for children 2-3 1/2 (with a caregiver) – 10:15 to 10:45 a.m.  Tuesdays; 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesdays; 9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays.

Preschool, for children 3 1/2-K (on their own) – 1 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays; 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays; and 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Thursdays.

Preschool Power, for children ages 3 1/2-K – 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Mondays, storytime combined with a computer class. (Parents drop off children in the youth program room and return to the computer lab at 11 a.m. to assist their children.)

Extend gardening season

Home gardeners can learn to extend the growing season from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Greenfield.

Roy Ballard, Purdue Extension educator, explains how gardeners can improve their chances for growing the earliest or largest vegetables in the neighborhood and how they can prolong production in the fall. Ballard will focus on a variety of techniques, used alone or in combination, to reduce environmental stress on quality plants growing outside their normal season.
