GREENFIELD — With only about a third of Hancock County residents actively using library cards, local officials are hoping to build momentum in September, deemed nationwide as Library Card Sign-up Month.
Touting “the smartest card in your wallet,” the Hancock County Public Library will roll out a banner and prizes to gain interest in the library and all of the books, media and services it has to offer.
“You can do just about anything here with your library card,” said Barbara Roark, assistant director of the library.
New this year is a “Food for Fines” program, slated for Sept. 15-21. The library will forgive fines on overdue items as long as the patron brings in nonperishable food or toiletries for local pantries.
“We’ll forgive up to $10 (in fines) at $1 per item,” said Cody Flood, circulation manager.
