Quotables

"Our passing game is an added element. We can pass. We just haven’t really done it or needed to the first couple of weeks. We have that available to us." -MV coach Doug Armstrong on two long first-quarter passes from QB Jordan Miller to TE Dan Werner.

"Coach said before we walked out, ‘Pendleton took it easy, we need to not take it easy.'" -MV left tackle Nick Smoot on Pendleton Heights' upset loss to Shelbyville before the MV-Rushville tilt.

"This was a big game for us, for the conference. Me and AB (Anthony Burnett) just did what we do, find holes." -MV running back Tyler Dicks on MV ground game.

End third quarter: Mt. Vernon 55, Rushville 8. After Rushville got on the board with a 1-yard TD by Garrett Hittle off a 73-yard scoring drive to open the second half, MV answered with a 24-yard touchdown run by Dicks and a 31-yard TD run by Burnett, in which he spun off a tackle in the middle of the field, broke for the left endzone pylon and dove in. Dicks (217 yards, 10 carries, 4 rushing TDs), Burnett (128 yards, 13 carries, 3 rushing TDs) and the first-team Marauder offense appear to be done for the day.

HALF: Mt. Vernon 41, Rushville 0. The Marauders rumbled their way to 238 yards on the ground in half one and 307 yards of total offense. Tyler Dicks rushed for 197 yards on nine carries. He had touchdown runs of 66, 71 and 13 yards. Anthony Burnett gained 90 yards on 12 carries with touchdown runs of 13 and 21 yards. Alec Lohman had MV's other TD, a 29-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. The Marauders first five scoring drives took the following number of plays: 2, 2, 4, 2 and 2. QB Jordan Miller had key first-quarter completions to Dan Werner of 35 and 34 yards.

MV's defense allowed 135 total yards, with just 32 coming on the ground. Lohman's INT in the first quarter stalled Rushville's only venture deep into Marauder territory.

MV has almost reached its point total in its victory over Rushville a season ago, a game the Marauders won 42-14.

End first quarter: Mt. Vernon 21, Rushville 0. MV scoring drives of two, two and four plays, culminated in a 66-yard TD run by Tyler Dicks, a 13-yard TD run by Anthony Burnett and a 7-yard TD run by Burnett. Dicks has 100 yards on four carries, Burnett with 64 yards on seven carries.

Rushville managed to drive deep into MV territory once, but Alec Lohman intercepted Rushville QB Clay Tressler on the MV 4.

2:20: p.m. FINAL: Shelbyville 17, Pendleton Heights 14. Shelbyville improves to 2-2 and 2-0 in HHC play. Pendleton Heights drops to 3-1, 1-1 HHC. Both Mt. Vernon and Rushville have taken the field and are right on time for a 2:30 start.

Pre-game notes: MV has won 16 of the last 17 meetings with Rushville, with the lone setback coming in 2008, a game the Marauders lost 35-3. MV running back Anthony Burnett is the leading rusher in Hancock County with 473 yards accumulated so far in 2012.

Rushville QB Clay Tressler has passed for 432 yards so far this season, while MV QB Jordan Miller has completed just four passes. On paper, MV (2-1, 1-0 HHC) and RV (1-2, 0-1) are a contrast in styles.
