Less than an hour from tip-off for Mt. Vernon (22-4) vs. Hamilton Heights (23-2) in Class 3A Girls Basketball State Finals in the 38th Annual IHSAA Tournament at the Hulman Center at Indiana State University.

Mt. Vernon is making its second straight state finals appearance after losing to Ft. Wayne Concordia 42-39 last year. Erica Moore is the only starter returning from that MV team, which was hit hard by injuries this season, including to Moore (17.8 ppg). Moore and Olivia Coleman underwent knee surguries, and Coleman has been out since the second week of the season. Freshman guard Sydney Shelton (17.8 ppg), senior guard Rachel Houck (11.5 ppg), sophomore guard/forward Shaely Duff (5.1 ppg) and senior forward Ellie Balbach (2.2 ppg) are expected to join Moore as starters today.

Hamilton Heights is playing in its first-ever basketball state finals. The Huskies already have a win over Mt. Vernon this season; they defeated host MV 70-61 Nov. 21. The Huskies' top three scorers — Dakota Weatherford (19.8 ppg), Haley Cook (16.9 ppg) and Kiley Walters (9.3 ppg) — are each 5-fooot-5, and the team relies on a full-court press and fast, transition offense to put teams away. In their regular season matchup, HH raced to a 47-27 halftime lead.

MV will likely aim to counter today by focusing on Moore (6-1) and their overall size advantage, with Shelton (5-8), Duff (5-9) and Balbach (5-11) each standing taller than their counterparts. Houck, a shooting guard, is 5-6.

A couple of other notes before we get started:

* The Mt. Vernon team bus driver was a little anxious to get here today. As the team traveled from a local Terre Haute high school, where it held a shoot around a few hours ago, to the Hulman Center, the bus got pulled over and the police officer issued a speeding ticket.

* Two days after he suffered a heart attack on this same ISU floor while the team held its official pre-state finals practice, on Thursday, MV assistant coach Tom Kirby is expected to be back on the bench. Kirby had 100 percent blockage in two arteries and underwent surgery at a Terre Haute hospital after falling ill toward the end of practice Thursday. We'll have more on Kirby and his remarkable recovery later in the Daily Reporter.

We'll post another update to this blog at halftime. For complete game updates, follow us on Twitter @GDRsports.

Halftime. Mt. Vernon 32, Hamilton Heights 20

After HH took a 5-2 lead to start the game, Shelton took over for the Marauders. The freshman has 17 points at the break on 5-of-9 shooting, and HH's quickness hasn't been much of a problem. If this lead holds up, MV will become first basketball team in Hancock County history to win a state championship.

FINAL

Mt. Vernon 61, Hamilton Heights 47

The Marauders have made history. Behind freshman Sydney Shelton's 29 points and Erica Moore's  record 15 rebounds, MV cruised through the second half on way to the first state championship in program history, and the second in school history following the softball team's 2000 2A title.

Shelton's 29 points were four shy of Katie Gearld's 3A single-game record of 33 points for Beech Grove in 2003.

Moore's 15 rebounds set a new single-game Class 3A championship record.

Rachel Houck won the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award.

Look for a complete recap of the state finals soon in the Daily Reporter.
