Here in Greencastle today, Mt. Vernon is aiming for its first regional title since 1991. In their last regional appearance, MV also faced Danville. In the 2010 regional final at Shelbyville, then No. 1-ranked Danville took a 47-43 victory. With the state's top-ranked 3A defense this year — allowing only 41.3 points per game — MV is hoping for another low-scoring affair. The Warriors, however, are netting 65.1 points per contest and have scored at least 70 points in five straight games.

Senior Ian Asher, a Wheaton College recruit, paces Danville at 17.1 points per game. CJ Coleman, a MV junior attracting DI and DII attention, leads the black-and-gold at 19.5 ppg. Danville's Avery Motes and the Marauders' Stephen Turner are their respective team's No. 2 scorers at 15 ppg.

10:31 a.m.

End 1st half, Danville 21, Mt. Vernon 20

Mt. Vernon dominated the early going, using a size at advantage at most positions and defensive intensity to take an 11-5 lead on a CJ Coleman coast-to-coast layup with 7:12 left in the second quarter. That prompted a timeout from Danville coach Brian Barber, and his team responded with a 14-4 blitz to take a 19-15 advantage 1:12 left in the half. MV missed the front end of two 1-and-1 free throw opportunities during the skid and was generally out-worked. We'll see how the Marauders respond in the second half. MV's Anthony Burnett hit a 3-pointer and Coleman hit a long 2 at the buzzer to help close the half on a 5-1 run for the Marauders.

Asher leads the Warriors with nine points, while Coleman was eight points for the Marauders.

12:10 p.m.

Final. Mt. Vernon 56, Danville 41

The Marauders moved a step closer to a regional title by overwhelming the Danville defense in the second half. Unable to check MV's aggressiveness, Danville committed 12 fouls in the third quarter and MV converted 12-of-18 free throw attempts on the way to outscoring the Warriors 18-6 in the quarter. MV took a 38-27 lead into the fourth and continued to wear out a path to the free throw line. Over the final eight minutes, MV went only 14-of-24 from the line, but it was enough to hold off a cold-shooting Danville squad. Four Danville starters eventually fouled out. The Warriors went 7-of-29 from the field in the second half. Box score from the game is below.

Follow us on Twitter @GDRsports for live updates of the second semifinal between Frankfort and Edgewood. As of this writing, at the end of the first quarter, Frankfort had a 12-6 lead. We'll back on this blog tonight for updates of the MV regional championship quest.

Tonight's Mt. Vernon-Frankfort winner will play the winner of the Greensburg-Brownstown Central game next Saturday in a one-game semistate. Semistate sites will be announced tomorrow. Mt. Vernon (if it advances) will head to Richmond or Seymour for semistate.

In tonight's final at Greencastle, Mt. Vernon's vaunted 1-3-1 defense will take on a Frankfort team that, much like Danville, prefers a faster pace. The Hot Dogs are averaging 65.3 points, although they proved this afternoon in a 55-49 semifinal win that they can grind it out and be successful. Frankfort has one common opponent with Mt. Vernon — Danville. Frankfort beat the Warriors 73-64 Feb. 7. One game later, Frankfort shots the lights out in a 110-62 victory over Clinton Central. MV will aim to keep the Hot Dogs to a third of that offensive total.

Five players average between 9-15 points for the Hot Dogs: Dakota Isgrigg (14.8), Brody Kirby (13.0), Isaac Rudd (10.7), Christian Smith (10.3) and Nathan Wisman (9.2).

Mt. Vernon hasn't won a regional title since 1991; it was one of two in program history, and the team has never made it past semistate. Frankfort's regional drought extends  to 1985. Back in the day, Frankfort was a state powerhouse program. The squad won 48 sectional titles between 1921 and 1997 (the end of the single-class era). The 2012 and 2013 seasons were the Hot Dogs' first two sectional titles since 1997. They also won 20 regional titles between 1921-1949; semistates in 1936, 1939 and 1942; and state titles in 1925, 1929, 1936 and 1939.

We'll see if the Rise of the Wiener continues tonight in Greencastle.

Halftime. Mt. Vernon 27, Frankfort 24

CJ Coleman has 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 at the line to give MV the edge. The Marauders, despite having three starters (Burnett, Spears, Werner) with two fouls each in the first quarter were in control most of the first half, leading 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and 25-16 with three minutes left in the half. Frankfort closed on an 8-2 run, however, including a traditional 3-point play by Nate Wissman with 0.4 seconds left on the clock. Wissman leads the Hot Dogs with eight points.

9:28 p.m.

FINAL. Mt. Vernon 70, Frankfort 49

As expected, Frankfort focused on Coleman in the second half, and his MV teammates were eager to take advantage. The Marauders outscored the Hot Dogs 26-14 in the third quarter, with Coleman registering zero points and distributing four assists, while Turner, Burnett and Spears did most of the damage. That trio combined for 21 points without missing a single shot (8-for-8, including 5-for-5 3-point attempts) in the quarter to put the game away.

Turner hit back to-back 3-pointers to extend the Marauders' lead from 34-32 to 40-32 with 4:27 left in the third. Frankfort called a timeout to stop the surge, but MV just kept pulling away, taking a 53-38 lead on a Spears 3-pointer to end the quarter.

Final Mt Vernon championship leaders: Coleman 29 pts, Turner 18 pts, Burnett 9 pts 7 assists, Spears 9 pts.

The Marauders cut down the nets, then headed back to Hancock County for a late-night (11:30 p.m.) pep rally at the high school.

Greensburg won its regional title, so it's 3A No. 1 Mt. Vernon (24-1) vs No. 2 Greensburg (24-1) in 3A semistate championship next Saturday, at Seymour or Richmond, TBD tomorrow by the IHSAA.

Look for a complete recap, with comments from both championship head coaches and MV players, photographs and a lookahead to the semistate soon in the Daily Reporter. Thanks for checking in with us today, and we'll see you Saturday!
