GREENFIELD — Regional doughnut aficionados who’ve had to elbow and shove toward the end of the weekday rush-hour doughnut availability window for a coveted Tiger Tail at Jack’s Donuts in New Castle can breathe a bit easier.
Saturday marked the grand opening of the latest Jack’s franchise in Greenfield.
Over the last 50 years, Jack and Ada Marcum’s place has become a best-kept Henry County secret for some and a doughnut destination for others, but in late 2011, third generation owner Lee Marcum, who purchased the shop from his dad in 2007, decided to take the brand on the road and began accepting franchise applications.
In February a Fishers store was opened, and last week, Ron and Shawn Youngclaus opened the latest Jack’s incarnation at 1522 N. State St. in the Green Meadows Shopping Center.
For Marcum, franchising was as much about breaking new geographical territory as it was about breaking into uncharted business waters.
“I love what I do,” Marcum, who began working in his grandfather’s shop at the age of 14, said Wednesday. “I love making doughnuts, and I’ve been told as long as I can remember nobody makes doughnuts like ours. People come from miles around for them.”
