GREENFIELD — Sitting in her office at J.B. Stephens Elementary School on a recent afternoon, Candy Short thought back to the year the school was being built.

It was more than a decade ago, and as the school’s first principal, Short had a hand in just about everything, from the style of the furniture to the color of the carpet.

When the 2014 school year starts, many things will remain the same in the place where Short has led the way since 2002, but the school’s biggest cheerleader will no longer be at the helm.

This week, Short announced her plans to retire at the end of the school year. It will mark the end of a 40-year career in education.
