HANCOCK COUNTY — A faded invitation still hangs in the tiny lobby of the Maxwell post office, three decades after its centennial celebration.

“June 1882 – June 1982,” it says. The printed words on the card from longtime community postmaster Clarence E. Johnson marked a special occasion.

But 30 years later, as more people are using the Internet to pay bills and keep in touch with loved ones, the Maxwell office faces another occasion – this one not so celebratory.
