FOUNTAIN CITY — The Eastern Hancock volleyball team endured a nightmare start to its season, but the blue-and-white clad spikers are playing well at the perfect time following a midseason makeover.
The Royals swept Hagerstown 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 Thursday night in a Class 2A Sectional 41 quarterfinal match at Northeastern. EH (12-22) has won five of its last seven matches heading into the semifinals, where the defending sectional champion Royals will face No. 13 Centerville (14-4) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the second semifinal of the day. The first semifinal is Northeastern (10-22) vs. No. 11 Union County (23-10).
Thursday was a grudge match for coach Kevin Adams’ group — on Sept. 28, the Tigers topped the Royals 30-28, 11-25, 15-8.
“I’m really excited that our team pulled one out. We lost to them in a close match to Hagerstown earlier in the season,” said Adams, an EH assistant up until this season. “We made some changes and we are working in a different system. Different people had to step in and do some different things tonight, and that ended up being the difference.”
