PENDLETON — Taking his victory lap around Pendleton Elementary School-Primary one recent day, Assistant Principal Matt Davis was in his element. Dozens of happy schoolchildren chanted his name. Students threw handfuls of homemade confetti at his smiling face, and some of them ran toward him with arms outstretched for a hug.

It was a special day for the school, which was honoring Davis for being named the state’s Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year.

The award, presented late last month at a ceremony in Indianapolis, continues a family tradition: Matt’s father, Phil Davis, was named Indiana’s Principal of the Year in 2005. He retired as the longtime principal at Mt. Comfort Elementary School in 2011.

Like his father eight years ago, Matt, a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, was moved by the honor.

“It was almost unbelievable when they called my name,” Davis said. “I’m still very shocked.”
