In its modern form, the Hancock County Basketball Tournament will be contested for the 10th time Saturday when Eastern Hancock, Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon and New Palestine square off at various locations. But, the county tourney battles extend further back than a decade. The previous incarnation of the local hoops battle dated from 1920 through 1967, when school consolidation forced a decades-long interruption to the tourney before it was resurrected in 2003. Here's a look at some of the history — old and new — for our local basketball classic.

PREDICTIONS

Sports editor Brian Harmon takes a stab at forecasting Saturday's winners:

Boys winner: Mt. Vernon

If there’s a more impressive defense than Mt. Vernon’s, I haven’t seen it. The Marauders’ semifinal matchup with New Palestine is essentially the championship game. (Although I’d give Eastern Hancock a puncher’s chance against a tired NP team in the title game). But, battling through MV’s 1-2-2 trap and 3-2 zone, the Dragons won’t break loose on offense. New Pal will snap the Marauders’ streak of eight straight opponents held to 50 or fewer points, but MV takes a 63-57 semifinal win, then triumphs over EH  in the championship.

Girls winner: Mt. Vernon

Unless Mt. Vernon’s top eight players each get snowed in by blizzards specifically located over their homes, the 3A No. 7 Maraduers are a lock for a fourth straight county title. They’re simply too big, quick and good for rebuilding New Palestine and Greenfield-Central programs. That’s not to say there won’t be drama in the girls’ field. Class 2A Eastern Hancock has won only one game in the history of the tourney (against 17 losses), but win No. 2 could easily come in the consolation game against 4A New Palestine, or, with a heroic effort, in the semifinal against 4A G-C. I’ll take MV to beat the host Cougars in the championship 69-44, and EH to handle New Pal in the consolation.
