GREENFIELD — With the exception of a shop scattered here and there in Muncie and a couple of locations in the Indianapolis metro area, Don Clements’ Foot Remedy in Greenfield has been the only place for miles to get new soles for shoes.
For nearly 20 years, Clements has been drawing customers from New Castle and Anderson and from Pendleton to Shelbyville.
Though it’s been a good run, repairing shoes, horse tack, a vast array of straps and purses, and some items one wouldn’t ordinarily associate with a shoe repair shop – “I even have a beekeeper’s suit back there now” – Clements intends to hang up the apron at year’s end, sell the repair business and expand Foot Remedy’s retail operation.
“It hasn’t been too bad,” Clements said. “I’ve made a good living at it, but I’ve put in a lot of hours, and the work’s a bit physical.”
