GREENFIELD — The Delta football program is in the midst of its longest Hoosier Heritage Conference title drought ever. Judging by first glance Friday, the crownless streak’s days could be numbered.
Delta dominated Greenfield-Central 60-7 in each team’s HHC opener. It was a contest marked by the Cougars’ mistakes and the Eagles’ mastery on both side of the ball — they held G-C to negative-1 yard rushing and collected 506 yards of total offense.
With Delta ahead 14-0 midway through the second quarter, G-C had turnovers on the first play from scrimmage on its next two possessions. Both turnovers led to Delta scores and, up 28-0, the Eagles were well on the way to a blowout.
Delta led 35-0 at halftime, then Greenfield had a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, a fumble and an interception (both led to touchdowns) on its first three possessions of the second half.
“It was 7-0 at the end of the first,” Dodson noted. “I thought we came out playing hard. But you make the kind of mistakes we did against a good football team like this … this is the result you get.”
The Cougars had -5 yards of total offense and one first down until late in the third quarter when Stephen Dickerson caught a pass near the line of scrimmage from Jeremiah Fields and broke free for a 75 yard touchdown.
