LAST SEASON: 11-5-1
5-2 HHC; lost 2-0 to New Palestine in sectional championship
Head coach: Amanda Eid (1st season)
One of Amanda Eid’s career goals was to be the head coach of a high school soccer team. Just 25-years-old and an assistant at Roncalli last year, Eid figured she had plenty of time to move up the ranks.
She was hired this summer to teach at Greenfield Junior High after previously working at a private Roncalli feeder school. Eid was satisfied with earning the new teaching gig and was shocked when offered the Cougars’ varsity head coach job.
“I got a call about the teaching position, then they said they had a coaching position I might be interested in,” Eid said. “It was a surprise to me, to say the least.”
Dan Naegeli resigned after leading the Cougars to an 11-5-1 record last fall. The fifth-year coach was replaced in June when G-C announced the hiring of Valdo Da Costa, but the area club coach abruptly resigned less than a month later for “personal reasons,” according to athletic director Kevin Horrigan.
That left a perfectly-timed opening for Eid, who couldn’t be happier.
“I’ve told several people, this is my dream job,” she said. “I wasn’t planning on being a head coach this soon. It’s beyond my wildest dreams.”
Da Costa had already hired all new assistant coaches, and they resigned when he did. So, Paula Culver, a veteran of the Greenfield athletic scene, will step in as Eid’s assistant.
Just as Eid begins a new phase of her teaching and coaching careers, she inherits a team that is also in transition.
