Defending sectional champ Connersville outscored host Greenfield-Central 15-11 in the fourth quarter in a girls basketball matchup Friday on the way to a 44-43 victory.

The Cougars (7-5), who will visit Connersville for 4A Sectional 9 in six weeks, led this one most of the way, including 24-18 at halftime and 32-29 entering the final quarter.

But the Spartans (10-4) hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the fourth quarter to take control. G-C’s Savannah Girolami hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

Girolami finished with nine points, while Maddie Wise (15) and Regan Lewis (13) led the Cougars.

G-C won the junior varsity game 33-24 behind Bradlie Gruell’s 16 points.

The Cougars (2-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference) are in conference action today at Delta (3-6, 0-2 HHC).

The Class 2A No. 7 Royals improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference.

Kiersten Schrope led host EH with 17 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and five steals. Hannah Best had 13 points and three steals. Darby Shaw added 11 points and nine rebounds.

“A very solid effort from beginning to end,” EH coach Jeremy Powers said. “We controlled the game throughout and never felt challenged all night. It was nice to get another ‘rung’ on our journey to a conference title — especially after only practicing one day this week. I am very proud of the girls and their effort tonight.”

The Royals host Edinburgh Monday in their annual Pink-Out Night and Youth League Recognition Night.
