GREENFIELD — Every December, scores of local children are delighted to open a letter from the best person to get mail from at Christmastime.

The special post comes from Santa Claus, and the recipients are always thrilled to learn that (deservedly or not) they’ve avoided this year’s naughty list.

Each year, the Greenfield-Central High School Best Buddies club works hard to preserve that special moment for Hancock County youngsters.

The effort started as a small fundraising effort for the club, which fosters friendships among children with and without disabilities. Each letter is $3, or two for $5.

But in its second year, addressing the letters to Hancock County children has become more like a special tradition.
